Partimos de la hipótesis de que, como todas las identidades nacionales, la española es el resultado de una construcción cultural compleja que no puede existir sin una lengua y una literatura que la alimente.
La identidad nacional es una mezcla de historia, mitos, invenciones oficiales e invenciones colectivas, que viene del pasado pero que está en gestación. En este proceso la literatura, los mitos, los símbolos y las leyendas son claves para fortalecer el nacionalismo. Consideramos, además, que en su forma moderna, los nacionalismos tienen su origen en el siglo XIX, al amparo del desarrollo del liberalismo político y del romanticismo cultural.
We start from the hypothesis that, like all national identities, Spanish is the result of a complex cultural construction that cannot exist without a language and literature that feeds it.
National identity is a mixture of history, myths, official inventions and collective inventions, which comes from the past but is constantly evolving. In this process literature, myths, symbols and legends play a critical role to strengthening nationalism. We also consider that, in their modern form, nationalisms have their origin in the nineteenth century, under the protection of the development of political liberalism and cultural romanticism.
El objetivo de este proyecto…
…es reconstruir, analizar y explicar cómo la literatura incide en la creación de la nueva idea de nación, acorde a las distintas ideologías en lid, y cómo esos imaginarios, difundidos a través de los propios discursos culturales y, concretamente de los literarios, entran en conflicto y negocian en diferentes momentos de la historia con otras memorias individuales, familiares y locales, antes de convertirse en memoria colectiva.
Pero además, y no menos importante, ya que se trata de un proyecto sobre literatura, el objetivo es analizar también el mecanismo inverso: cómo la nueva forma de entender las identidades en el marco de la nación moderna necesita generar una literatura distinta, influye sobre la manera de escribir, sobre la elección y conformación de los géneros y, en definitiva, cómo hace cambiar la literatura de su tiempo.
The objective of this project…
…is to reconstruct, analyze and explain how literature influences the creation of a new idea of nation, according to the different ideologies in fight, and how those imaginaries, disseminated through cultural discourses and, specifically, literary ones, enter into conflict and negotiate at different moments in history with other individual, family and local memories, before becoming collective memory.
Last, but not less important, since it is a project on literature, the aim is also to analyze the reverse mechanism: how the new way of understanding identities within the framework of the modern nation needs to generate a different literature, how it influences the way of writing, the choice and conformation of the genres and, finally, how it changes the literature of its time.

Nuestra propuesta es, pues, revisar la correspondencia entre literatura y nación, pensar y repensar los cimientos sobre los que se ha construido la literatura nacional en España entre 1831 y 1879, fechas para las que consideramos que se extiende el sistema liberal informativo, se construye el canon y se marcan las diferencias entre la literatura española y otras literaturas nacionales. La publicación en 1831 de la revista Cartas españolas, y la finalización en 1879 de la Segunda Serie de los Episodios Nacionales de Galdós, son los hitos literarios que hemos marcado para abordar este proyecto.

Therefore, our proposal is to review the correspondence between literature and nation, to think and rethink the foundations on which the national literature has been constructed in Spain between 1831 and 1879, dates in which we consider that the liberal information system is extended, the canon is made and marks the differences between Spanish literature and other national literatures. The publication in 1831 of the magazine Cartas Españolas and the finalization in 1879 of the Second Series of the Episodios Nacionales by Galdós are the literary milestones that we have marked to approach this project.

En primer lugar, una historia de la literatura española de este periodo que atienda a su contribución al proyecto nacionalizador.
Paralelamente se está creando una base de datos con las obras y autores que desarrollan el imaginario literario español, que será el punto de partida para abordar, en segundo lugar, una nueva visión de los mitos literarios españoles.
Tras un seminario preparatorio sobre «Representaciones e imaginarios nacionales españoles», que tuvo lugar en noviembre de 2017, en diciembre de 2018 se celebrará un Seminario con el título de «Imaginarios nacionales» (1831-1879).
En el mes de octubre de 2020, como parte esencial de la puesta en común y divulgación del proyecto, se celebrará un congreso con participación de especialistas de la comunidad académica.
Además, de la publicación de la base de datos y de los volúmenes sobre el imaginario literario hispánico, se publicarán resultados parciales.

At the same time, a database is being created with the works and authors that develop the Spanish literary imaginary, which will be the starting point to approach, in second place, a new vision of the Spanish literary myths.
In 2018, a seminar on «Spanish National Representations and Imaginaries» was held, to be continued in 2019, under the title «National imaginaries» (1831-1879).
In October 2020, as an essential part of the sharing and dissemination of the project, a congress will be held with the participation of specialists from the academic community.
In addition, the publication of the database and of the volumes on the Hispanic Literary Imaginary, the partial results will be presented previously in international conferences and will be published.
